april showers bring may flowers, but this april claude vonstroke brings you the rain break. inspired by two different songs from the 80s - (razes classic break for love and oran juice jones the rain), claude has replayed and re-sung all the music from scratch to make a special cover tune of both tracks changed and combined into a surefire dirtybird classic. to quote vonstroke, i kept singing the break for love bassline over and over again in my head but the vocal that always popped in over the top was from the oran juice jones. i cant explain why that happened but i just thought they went together so well that i ran with it.here comes the b is a much weirder affair. built with massive psychedelic effects, a huge kick and almost no hi-hat pattern, this is late night cavemen music at its best. this big release from cvs will have you wishing for a downpour so you can go walking in the rain.

this new strand release on lowriders, maleza is a very personal take on bass music, juke, west coast hiphop, jamaican music, prepared pianos, old detuned synths, odd time signatures and huge live reverbs. the idea of the record came when i was going through a lot of personal struggle and i was not able to get out of it. in the same period i decided to run in the woods near my home early in the morning. i ran every day, and ran and ran. eventually i got out of my problems. so i left the maleza away. this is a very personal record, each sound has a deep meaning about me and my loved ones. maleza means bad herbs, weeds, undergrowth in spanish.

the endurance club was launched in london on friday 13th november 2009 and ran as a regular party for the next three years. the aim was to treat electronic body music as an important genre in its own right rather than just a sub genre of industrial music, whilst linking it to early house and techno, belgian new beat and synthesizer dance music in general. body party is a tribute to all those that were part of the endureance club and to the artists that made the records we danced to.

optimo trax is an offshoot label of optimo music for tracks aimed at djs/dancefloors. yes, we know there are too many record labels already, but we felt an overriding desire to start another one as so much music that didnt seem quite right for optimo music (i.e. music that was specifically designed for dancing) kept coming our way. like the parent label, optimo trax will release music by new artists and excavate forgotten classics. luma is a project by dave clark from glasgow. dave had his first release as a member of state of flux in 1993 on t&b vinyl, the label twitch ran with his dj partner of that era, brainstorm. twitch and dave have continued to work together in various ways ever since. he has released records as truffle club, and as big ned on optimo music as well as working with twitch from 2005 - 2010 remixing a plethora of artists under the optimo (espacio) moniker before fatherhood necessitated him focusing on changing nappies rather than programming synths. dave has also recorded under various aliases for r&s, numbers, stuffrecords, dissident and wireblock. the twentieth anniversary of that first release seemed a fitting date for dave to unleash his monster new club music alter ego, luma on optimo trax. twitch thinks dave is the best producer in scotland and endlessly weeps into his gin and tonics about how unprolific dave is, so was ecstatic when the 4 killer tracks were delivered that make up this third optimo trax ep. these have been thoroughly road tested over the last few months at gigs around the world.

few people stand for a real underground approach to techno like adam x does. for over 20 years he has been right in the center of the scene. before moving to berlin he ran the sonic groove record shop in nyc for 15 years. the sonic groove label also owned by adam is still a dominating force in the scene and has released music of legends like abe duque, blake baxter, frankie bones, kevin saunderson and many more. with djing, producing music adam in recent years has received a lot of support from people like chris liebing and many others for his productions as adam x as well as for his aliases traversable wormhole, admx-71.adam’s sound is dark and heavily influenced by his passion for industrial and old school ebm music. with coercive persuasion on the a-side he combines these influences with a functionality that can only derive from his extensive touring as a dj and live act. it is a dark anthem that will destroy all real techno floors. no doubt. the b-side deprogramming sequence comes along with driving bells that give the stomping beat of the track a little uplift and therewith balances out the heavy dark side of the ep.

last year, san franciscos icee hot made the jump from party to record label, kicking off its run with a release from resident/co-founder ghosts on tape and following it up with a record from lando kal, an artist whose ties to the bay area (and the icee hot crew in particular) ran deep.

i was finishing up a long extended set in paris when the cleckcleckboom crew practically ran into the club to get on the decks. i had hung out with them before but tonight they had all new tracks and an incredible energy. so i stayed past the last ravers just to hear what they would play and that was when i heard “hugz” by french fries and bamabounou. this was a new sound, some nasty nasty shit sitting somewhere between juke and bass music and and i knew we had to get this sound on dirtybird no matter what. needles to say “yo vogue” is hot property and i’m really excited to release it on dirtybird. the half time drop, the chopped and screwed vocal, the stuttering bass kicks, the creepy moog on top - it’s simple and complex at the same time and it wrecks shop whenever it gets played. i did a remix on the b side giving it some db flavor and dirtybird newcomer leroy peppers lays out his own bay area skeeze with hot sauce on top. watch yer bass bins! best, vonstroke.

in 1973 focus were at their peak! they simultaneously had two top 10 albums (focus 3 (movlp022) and moving waves (movlp023)) and two hitsingles (sylvia & hocus pocus). all of the musicians were voted as top 10 musicians in each of their categories. jan akkerman was voted worlds best guitarist. with a live reputation that proved focus lived up to these best musicians claims, the right thing to do was to release a live album: focus at the rainbow. somewhere over western europe, an un-identified falling object crashed landed causing a massive bang, and a ginormous banana shaped smoke cloud. frederic, a local artistic young chap was so inspired by this hilariously funny giant cloud that covered the whole sky as far as he could see, he ran indoors to take cover, and wrote a little summer step d&b beat, called >laughing at clouds< – which seemed to draw a lot of attention. out of the studio window, frederic could see what seemed to be a pink giraffe giving it some serious head-nodding action. by the second drop leonard (the pink giraffe) was dancing so heavily that he caused a small tremor somewhere over in the states, where young up & coming producer melo seemed to pick up the transmission. while in his sonic laboratory he managed to transfer his latest project (affirmation) through the current, where frederic decided to make his first remix project, which pretty much made leonard pass out after all the summer stepping….
